Recent Installations

Having a vision for a sculpture in your head, then realizing that vision is what makes artmaking so addictive.  But equally satisfying is installing a piece that seems so utterly perfect for that spot, it feels like it has been there for years.  Here are three recent installations that all felt that way:

Thomas Fire Relandscape

I’ve installed several “Art Showers” with petroglyphs custom created with the clients’ imagery in mind, but I’ve never had my petroglyphs embedded into a patio or exterior walls. This garden was designed by the homeowner, replacing an outbuilding destroyed in the Thomas Fire.  The garden is both fire-conscious and utilizes xeriscape plants in a palette of beautiful colors.  It takes full advantage of the breathtaking ocean view overlooking Ventura.  The “Foxes Play” petroglyphs work beautifully in the stucco walls, with a “Goddess Eye” catching the glowing sunset each night.  I couldn’t be happier to have my work in this gorgeous sanctuary.

Eastend Elegance

I don’t often feel like I have to “match” my work to other existing art pieces in a home, but this steel and handblown glass chandelier by Lindsey Adelman is a showstopper. Suspended over a 20-foot dining table, it is a dazzling focal point in this home. I was asked to provide a sculpture for the courtyard beyond. I felt my sculpture had to be simple, not compete with the chandelier, yet also be a strong work in and of itself.  I love the way the two pieces work together.  It is such a tranquil space.

Fountain Remodel – Take Two

This was a super fun project.  The homeowner had bought a sleek concrete bowl with a simple copper spouthead for her back garden. Then she came to my Second Saturday Tour, saw my fountains, and had “Buyers’ Regret.”  I suggested we work with what she had, installing an unusual grey Brazilian amethyst caldera in the center. I’m not fond of pipes and plumbing showing in fountains. With the caldera in place, the pipe vanishes; the fountain bubbles and sheets off the rim, making a lovely sound while still retaining the tranquil elegance of the original fountain.
